What is the purpose for the bar coding on my bank statement? It's located near my address.?

The bar code can be scanned to pull up all the information on the statement. They do this to discourage people from altering information on the bank statement, perhaps to reflect a bigger balance or something.

If yes, it is the USPS bar code which enables the letter to be sorted faster.
