I have been in computer programming since the 1960's.
In my experience, to be successful, you have to know several things.
* How to do the coding, so that programs work, and can be enhanced.
* How to use latest technologies, such as SOA, to improve the quality of our work
* How to document our work to make future modifications more practical
* Know particular industries that use our skills ... it is no good knowing how to drive a truck if you can't find your destination ... similarly, to program in accounting you have to know accounting, to program engineering applications, you have to know engineerinbg, to program inventory applications, you have to understand inventory
* Be able to inter-relate, communicate, etc. with the people for whom we are doing the coding ... they speak in a totally different language terminology than the coders
